Human Rights Film Festival - SPARK

Spark, The Human Rights Film Festival, are joining us at the cinema and invites you to an exciting program of films, all aimed at sparking conversations about democracy, human rights, and environmental responsibility. The films below will be screened at Folkets Bio Umeå, all with English subtitles. After the screenings of George Orwell: 2+2=5 and Fiume o morte! panel descussions will be held in the screening hall.

The Voice of Hind Rajab Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania
In January 2024, the Red Crescent’s emergency call center receives a call from a six-year-old Palestinian girl trapped in a car in Gaza. While volunteers try to stay in contact with her, they work to get an ambulance to her. Based on the real-life event and Hind Rajab’s authentic phone calls, the film follows the desperate rescue effort.

Orwell: 2+2=5 Directed by: Raoul Peck
Raoul Peck’s documentary explores George Orwell’s life, writing, and political ideas. Through diaries, letters, archival material, and contemporary images, Orwell’s experiences and works, particularly 1984 and Animal Farm, are connected to our own time and to questions of propaganda, power, surveillance, and authoritarian politics.

Wake up, Serbia! Pumpaj: The student uprising Directed by Raül Gallego Abellán
The film follows the student-led protest movement in Serbia after the roof of the railway station in Novi Sad collapsed, killing 16 people in late 2024. What began as a demand for accountability and justice grew into widespread student occupations, demonstrations, and strikes. The film follows the movement from within, exploring its struggle for democracy, accountability, and change.

Fiume o morte! Directed by Igor Bezinović
In 1919 the Italian poet, dandy and preacher of war Gabriele D’Annunzio occupied the city of Fiume. The citizens of Fiume, today called Rijeka, retell and reinterpret the bizarre story about the 16-month occupation of their city in a brutally factual yet defiantly punk cinematic journey.
