This poignant documentary unveils the hidden crisis of sexual violence within Sápmi, the Indigenous Sámi homeland that spans across Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia. Through a tapestry of survivor testimonies, archival footage, animation, and poetic narration, the film offers an intimate yet collective portrait of how violence, silence, and shame have shaped generations of Sámi women. Director Liselotte Wajstedt, herself of Sámi descent, creates a work that is as much about resilience as it is about pain. The film breaks taboos and exposes how state neglect, racism, and internalized norms have compounded the harm. Tystnaden i Sápmi also contributes to broader global conversations about Indigenous rights, the legacy of colonialism, and the healing power of storytelling.
